A Note From Pastor Andrew

Confirmation seems so long ago. I don’t recall much from those days, except my teachers, Mrs. Dufendach or Ed Lang, saying, “Andrew, be quiet,” “Sit down,” “Stop that.” And yet, I still have fond memories of my teachers because year after year, week after week, on Thursday nights for one hour, they showed up to teach a bunch of young teenagers who had little interest in reading Martin Luther’s Small Catechism. They invested their time because they were invested in us.
Before our students make their own affirmation of faith on Reformation Day Sunday, October 26, I would like to affirm the work of our own Confirmation teachers, Andrea Nelson and Ann Gardner. They have been a gift to this congregation and to our young people as they continue their faith journey. Be sure to thank them for their commitment to the Faithful Teaching of our kids.
Now, Affirmation of Baptism, of course, is not simply a “graduation” from Sunday School or the end of learning— it’s about stepping forward in faith, with questions and doubts and hope, and saying, “With God’s help, I will.” Faith formation is lifelong; the Spirit will keep shaping and sending these young people into the world as witnesses to God’s grace.
As a church family, we are called to walk alongside them—encouraging them when faith feels difficult, listening when they wrestle with big questions, and celebrating with them as they discover their unique gifts for ministry. Let’s remind them that they are not alone on this journey. They are part of the body of Christ, surrounded by a community of believers who are cheering them on.
In Christ,
Andrew Potsko
Pastor of Community & Faith Formation
